“Jang Seung-hyun’s hand condition is fine, he will play normally”, batsman breathes a sigh of relief

Doosan Bears catcher Jang Seung-hyun thankfully escaped serious injury after a dizzying sand dune. Doosan breathed a sigh of relief after losing starting catcher Yang Yang-ji to injury.

Catcher Jang Seung-hyun, who was feared to have suffered a major injury, is in good physical condition and will wear a mask as the starting catcher. Jang was hit on the back of his left hand by a 146-kilometer fastball thrown by opposing starter Won Tae-in with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning of a 0-0 tie against the Samsung Lions in Jamsil on Sept. 9.

Jang continued to play normally until he was replaced by pinch-hitter Kang Seung-ho in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Doosan bench was concerned about the injury.

Fortunately, Jang Seung-hyun was hit by the ball on the back of his hand, which did not lead to an injury. He was able to play normally after taking a day off when Samsung Electronics’ game against Jamsil was canceled due to rain.

For Doosan, Jang Seung-hyun will have to play catcher for the time being, as Yang Yang-ji was scratched from the first team roster on Aug. 8 due to a side muscle injury. If Jang Seung-hyun was also sidelined with an injury, the depth of the catching staff would be greatly reduced.

“When Jang Seung-hyun was first hit by the ball, I thought it would be difficult, but he said he would do what he could,” said Lee Seung-yeop. “Fortunately, he was not seriously injured because the ball hit him on the back of his hand. If it hadn’t been for the protector, I think it would have led to a fracture,” he breathed a sigh of relief.

Doosan lost 4-6 to Samsung on April 9 and remains in fifth place, two games behind third-place KT Wiz and one game behind fourth-place NC Dinos. They are 1.5 games behind the sixth-place KIA Tigers, so the outcome of this weekend’s three-game series against Hanwha is crucial.
