Non-Tour Member Block, hole-in-one, tied for 15th… Gallery cheers.
At the PGA Championship, the second major of the US Professional Golf (PGA) Tour season, which concluded on Wednesday, there was one player who drew as much attention from the gallery as winner Brooks Koepka (USA). Michael Block (47-USA), the head professional at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, California, USA.
Block finished in a tie for 15th place with a final total of 1-over-par 281. It was the second-best finish in tournament history for a club professional, behind Rory Nielsen, who tied for 11th in 1986. The PGA Championship allocates 20 of the 156 tickets to the tournament to U.S. club professionals (golf course instructors). Block made the cut for the first time in his fifth appearance in the event, earning $288,333 in prize money. Block has reportedly been charging $150 per hour for lessons.메이저놀이터
Block, who made the cut in a tie for 10th place after two rounds of the tournament with an even-par total, continued to shoot even-par in the third round to move into a tie for eighth place. He was paired with Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland), the world number three in men’s golf, for the final four rounds on Sunday. Block’s surprise at being in the same group as McIlroy went viral online.
There were more surprises to come. On the 15th (par-3) hole of the day, Block hit a 7-iron for a hole-in-one. It was his first official hole-in-one of the tournament. The hole-in-one was capped off by a “dunk,” where the ball didn’t hit the green but went straight into the hole. “McIlroy told me five times that I had made a hole-in-one,” Block said. With the hole-in-one, Block moved up the leaderboard and earned a spot in next year’s PGA Championship, which is open to the top 15 players. He’s also been invited to the PGA Tour’s Charles Schwab Challenge, which starts on May 25, and the RBC Canadian Open in June.
Like the phrase “why not” emblazoned on his golf ball, it was a day that made everything come true for Block. After the tournament, Block said, “I’m living the dream. It was a surreal experience. There has never been a better moment in my life.”
